Acclaimed South Korean actor Lee Dong Wook, known for his memorable roles in Tale of the Nine Tailed and Divorce Insurance, is making a powerful comeback to television in the upcoming noir drama The Nice Guy, set to premiere on July 18, 2025. This time, he takes the lead in a compelling story filled with drama, action, and romance.
In The Nice Guy, Lee Dong Wook portrays Park Seok Chul, the eldest grandson of a third-generation gangster family. Despite his lineage, Seok Chul is a kind-hearted man who once dreamed of becoming a novelist, drawing inspiration from literary giants like Ernest Hemingway. However, life pushed him into the criminal underworld.
After years entangled in mafia affairs, Seok Chul finally decides to leave that life behind. Just as he turns over a new leaf, he reunites with Kang Mi Young (played by Lee Sung Kyung), his first love and an aspiring singer. Their encounter rekindles old feelings and draws them into a new story filled with romance, redemption, and the dangers of a haunting past.
Recently released stills from the drama highlight the duality of Lee Dong Wook’s character. In one image, Park Seok Chul appears with a bruised face, leaning against a subway window, visibly worn out.
In another, he shows a gentle smile — a sign that change and hope might be within reach. These contrasting visuals hint at a deeply emotional journey ahead.
Lee Dong Wook himself shared why he was drawn to this role:
“I wanted to work with director Song Hae Sung and screenwriter Kim Woon Kyung. I joined this project out of deep respect for both, as they’ve spent so many years on set.”
He also added:
“After immersing myself in darker genres and fantasy dramas, I wanted to return to something with romantic depth. That was one of the main reasons I chose this role.”
The Nice Guy is set to premiere on July 18, 2025. While the Korean broadcaster has already begun promoting the show, an official international streaming platform has yet to be confirmed. Stay tuned to Kdrama Universe for updates, and click here to watch the official teaser.
