The Queen Who Crowns is set to be a historical blockbuster, premiering on January 6, 2025. Inspired by real events in Korean history, this drama promises to captivate audiences with its gripping narrative of ambition, betrayal, and power struggles.
The Queen Who Crowns follows the story of Won Gyeong (Cha Joo Young), an intelligent and ambitious woman from the prestigious Min family. She marries Yi Bang Won (Lee Hyun Wook), the fifth son of King Tae Jo, who is determined to ascend the throne. When the king names his second son as successor, the couple forges their own path to coronation.
Won Gyeong mentors Bang Won, guiding him to become the third king of Joseon. However, after achieving their goal, Bang Won betrays Won Gyeong by taking concubines—a challenge that tests but does not break the queen’s resilient spirit. The story portrays Won Gyeong’s fight for her ideals and her evolution as a “kingmaker.”
The drama is based on the real-life figures Queen Won Gyeong and King Tae Jong of Joseon, offering a unique take on significant historical events.
Cha Joo Young shared her excitement for the project: “I’ve always wanted to try a historical drama, and this rare, unique storyline caught my attention.” She described her character as “a strong, independent woman who takes full responsibility for her choices.”
Lee Hyun Wook described Yi Bang Won as “a highly skilled man who made significant sacrifices for his ambitions.” His portrayal emphasizes the character’s internal conflicts and emotional depth.
Chae Ryeong, once a maid to Won Gyeong, becomes a royal concubine, adding layers of drama to the storyline.
Yeong Sil is another royal concubine, known as the mother of one of the king’s sons, adding intrigue to palace dynamics.
