Netflix is bringing another breathtaking Korean epic to the screen. Uprising is set during the Japanese invasion of Korea and explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the fight for justice. The story follows two childhood friends who, due to circumstances beyond their control, end up on opposite sides of a bloody conflict.
The film revolves around Jong Ryeo (played by Park Jung Min), the heir of a powerful military family, and his servant, Cheon Young (played by Kang Dong Won). As children, they grew up together, but in adulthood, their roles drastically change. Jong Ryeo becomes a respected military officer alongside King Seonjo (Cha Seung Won), while Cheon Young, longing for freedom and dignity, joins the rebel army fighting for the independence of Joseon.
The tension heightens when Jong Ryeo learns that his childhood friend was responsible for the death of his entire family. Driven by vengeance, he turns their friendship into a bitter rivalry, vowing to hunt down and destroy Cheon Young.
Kang Dong Won delivers a memorable performance as Cheon Young, a servant turned fearsome swordsman. Determined to reclaim his noble status, he finds himself at the heart of a war, fighting for justice and his own freedom. His battle scenes are intense and emotional, capturing the internal struggle of a man searching for redemption.
Park Jung Min shines as Jong Ryeo, bringing emotional depth to a character consumed by betrayal. Alongside Cha Seung Won, who portrays King Seonjo, the film paints a dark picture of the consequences of war, highlighting the corruption and disconnection between rulers and the people.
Other standout performances include Kim Shin Rok as Bum Dong, a commoner who transforms into a fierce warrior, and Jin Sun Kyu as Kim Ja Ryeong, a commander who leads a righteous army with unwavering values.
The teaser for Uprising sets the tone for the film’s tension-filled narrative. Opening with King Seonjo’s provocative question, “Is a king and a slave equal?”, the teaser cuts to scenes of rebellions, villages under attack, and the dramatic confrontation between Cheon Young and Jong Ryeo. The story emphasizes the clash between the oppressed and the nobility, with powerful imagery of slaves rising up against their former masters.
The highlight of the teaser is the final showdown between the two former friends, where Jong Ryeo expresses his hatred for Cheon Young: “I was a fool to befriend a lowly slave like you.”
Prepare for an epic journey of action, betrayal, and loyalty in Uprising, a film that promises to captivate fans of intense, drama-filled stories. Don’t miss its Netflix debut!
